State Representative Peter McCoy was elected in November 2010 to represent District 115 (James Island and Folly Beach) in the State House of Representatives.
He serves as a respected member of the Judiciary Committee and belongs to the South Carolina House Sportsmen Caucus.
Peter was born in Charleston, SC and grew up learning the meaning of hard work, family, and faith.
Peter is an attorney and small business owner with his private law practice. He is a former criminal prosecutor in the Ninth Circuit Solicitor’s Office, where he worked with Solicitor Scarlett Wilson to punish crime and put criminals behind bars. As a solicitor, Peter successfully prosecuted child sex offenders, drug dealers, kidnappers, burglars, and murderers.
Peter is licensed to practice law in South Carolina State Courts, South Carolina Federal District Court, and the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals. He is a member of the Criminal Law Bar Association, the South Carolina Bar Association, and the Charleston County Bar Association. In 2010, Peter served as the Vice President of the Charleston Lawyers Club, of which he had previously volunteered as Treasurer and Secretary.
Peter earned his law degree from Regent University Law School. He was an undergraduate double major at Hampden-Sydney College, studying history and religion. Peter was also a collegiate athlete, playing tennis for the Hampden-Sydney Tigers.
After his undergraduate studies, and prior to law school, Peter worked for Barton and Burwell Fishing Supplies. Additionally, he mated on the Sweet Deal and Pro-Motion charter boats.
Peter is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Michael McCoy, Sr. of Hartsville, South Carolina. His maternal grandparents are Mrs. George Franklin Coleman, Jr., (Lucy Davis Coleman) and the late Circuit Court Judge George Franklin Coleman, Jr. of Winnsboro, South Carolina. Peter’s maternal grandfather was a farmer, Circuit Court Judge, Solicitor for the Sixth Circuit, and a member of the State House of Representatives.
Peter’s paternal grandparents are Mrs. James Joseph McCoy (Helen Reutiman McCoy) and the late Doctor James Joseph McCoy of Charleston, South Carolina. Dr. McCoy served as a Pathologist at the Veterans Administrative Hospital in Charleston, SC.
Peter’s tough work ethic and appreciation for the outdoors were instilled by his family from a young age. He is an avid hunter and fisherman, a member of the NRA, Ducks Unlimited, Island Sportsmen Club and the South Carolina Saltwater Sportfishing Association. He is a participant in South Carolina Governor’s Cup Billfishing Series and a contributor to the South Carolina Memorial Reef.
Peter is a member and donor of the Friends of McLeod Plantation and the Save the Morris Island Lighthouse.
Promoting better education, Peter supports the Dr. Carolyn Cochrane Memorial Scholarship – benefiting a student of the headmaster’s discretion at the Charleston Day School.
An active member of the Charleston County Republican Party and the South Carolina State Republican Party, Peter is committed to reducing crime, promoting smart growth, improving education, creating jobs, and ending wasteful spending.
Peter lives in Farmington on James Island. He is married to Jennifer Blanchard McCoy, a former Charleston County Public School teacher and now a criminal prosecutor. They are the proud parents of a daughter, Mae Loflin McCoy.
