The SCGOP’s motto for this election year is that SC picks Republican nominees for President. http://www.scgop.com/ppp-history/
While this is true, their nominees don’t have a very good record as being the eventual winner in the Presidential elections. According to their website, Lee Atwater was responsible for making SC the first in the South primary. SC in 1976 and 1980 voted for Ronald Reagan for the Presidential nomination. I went to high school with Lee Atwater. He wasn’t a very serious student. In fact, he was the class clown.
Now, I don’t mean to demean Lee. I was one of the students who was a recipient of his humor. One thing about Lee that endeared me about him was his reaction to Otis Redding’s death. He was genuinely upset.
I digress. The SCGOP has picked Republican nominees, however, they haven’t always been voted as Presidents. The reason, I think for this is that SC Republicans almost always pick what they consider to be the “safe” candidate. By that I mean, they pick the least controversial Republican nominee. SC has a history of voting for the candidate that will not “rock the boat”. I give credit to Lee Atwater as does the SCGOP, but not for the first in the South primary as the SCGOP does, but for helping Ronald Reagan to become President.
I am one of those who are identified as a Reagan Democrat, and I am proud of it. Lee apologized for helping to elect Reagan. I believe that this apology was a result of his brain tumor which was the cause of his death. Reagan gave this country the real hope and change that President Obama promised. However you feel about Reagan, I lived through the Jimmy Carter years. President Reagan wasn’t perfect but he slowed down the onslaught of the Progressive Movement in this country.
There is a column posted on Redstate.com talking about Establishment Republicans vs Anti-Establishment Republican. http://www.redstate.com/dan_mclaughlin/2012/01/17/what-the-republican-establishment-really-means/
It is a very good read. This column makes a very good point. The point is that SC establishment Republicans will choose the safe course and not rock the boat. This is particularly true of the SC Republican Party.
I, for one, wish this wasn’t true.
