Thomas Sowell on Gingrich and The Florida Smear Campaign

Leave it to Thomas Sowell, a sage fellow, to get it right. He explains some things that have puzzled me lately and points to some likely reasons for these events.  His logic may also help us to understand why certain conservative pundits like Coulter and Beck seem to have sold out to the Romney machine.

Pardon my sexist remark following, but I can’t help but wonder if Ms. Coulter, having reached age 50 last December, isn’t now experiencing that “change in life” , the effect upon her being that a once reliably conservative lady has morphed into a squishy moderate that now thinks Romney hung the moon.  Crimony!  Coulter is tougher on Newt than on Obama! I can’t figure out Glenn’s venomous hatred of Newt unless his recent move to Texas brought on a mold infection or something .  Don’t get me wrong, I still love both of these people, but they’re testing me a bit.

Those that’ve read my posts on this site over the past couple of years would know that I’ve always been a Newt fan, but didn’t want him to run for president because he’d committed “sins” against conservatism, like getting close and personal with Nancy Pelosi (of all people). He admitted that was one of the dumbest things he’d ever done.  I became a Newtnik late in the SC primary game and voted for him, much to the delight of my dear wife, who’s always been in his camp.

Newt’s no angel, but there’s no way he’s as evil as the media and Romney’s ads (including his “disavowed” super PAC) would have us believe.  I think it’s far more likely that, in poking a stick into the hornets nest while he was Speaker of the House, he offended some pretty unscrupulous characters who unleashed the kind of vengeance and accusations that can ruin a person, even if that person is innocent.  And, as Mr. Sowell points out, his opponents “are not letting the facts get in their way”.

Unfortunately, there are likely to be far more people who will see the smears than will have time to get the facts. But, if nothing else, there needs to be some understanding of the reckless accusations that have become part of the all-out attempt to destroy Newt Gingrich, as so many other political figures have been destroyed, by non-stop smears in the media.

There have long been reports of people who decline to be nominated for federal judicial appointments because that means going before the Senate Judiciary Committee to have lies about their past spread nationwide, and the good reputation built up over a lifetime destroyed by politicians who could not care less about the truth.

The same practices may well have something to do with the public’s dissatisfaction with the current crop of candidates in this year’s primaries — and in previous years’ primaries. Character assassination is just another form of voter fraud.

My current thinking is that I will likely vote for a hard-nosed, imperfect and sometimes unlikeable person who’s up to the job – over a squishy “nice guy” who isn’t.
