Tim Scott’s Budget Vote – What’s the Real Story?

Congressman Tim Scott faced a choice this week:
1) Vote with Nancy Pelosi and maintain the status quo
2) Cut $6 billion in spending

Tim opted to cut $6 billion as part of the ongoing budget cut larger than in more than fifty years. We sent Tim to Washington to cut government spending and that’s exactly what he’s doing.

Let’s look at the background on the continuing resolution. The 2010 budget started on October 1st at approximately $3.5 trillion. The continuing resolution only deals with the annual appropriations which is about $1.3 trillion. Of that $1.3 trillion, $700 billion is the military budget and $666 billion is for other funding. There are some budget concessions in the military portion, but not many. Now, as the spending began in October, nearly 45% has already been spent because we’re nearly half way through the year. So the real task at hand is to cut $61 billion out of the $350 billion that remains for the fiscal year ending September 30th.

As you remember, Congress voted to cut $61 billion out during the remainder of the year or $2 billion per week. Tim supported that effort for the first short term continuing resolution and he continues to support spending cuts. Additionally, much has been reported about the funding for Obamacare remaining in the budget. It should be noted that the vast majority of the $105 billion reportedly in this continuing resolution for Obamacare is actually in future budgets.

Nancy Pelosi and others want to defend the status quo – the status quo which led to our fiscal insanity. She voted against the continuing resolution and Tim voted for $6 billion in budget cuts. We report, you decide.

“To truly get our fiscal house in order, we need a long term strategy that reforms our entitlement programs. To address this, next month, we will introduce our 2012 budget – that is where the real fight in Congress will be, and where we will make our stand, with 100% of federal spending on the chopping block.” –Congressman Tim Scott

I would like to thank Congressman Scott for giving me his time and insight on this vote.  His willingness to take a tough stance and to communicate with his constituents is just what this district needed.  We appreciate that he has a very difficult job, but we sent him to Washington because we believed he had the strength of character to do a tough job well.  He hasn’t let us down.  ~Conservative 101

It is a refreshing change to see a representative actually doing what they said they would do. Thank you Mr. Scott.

    Blessings

Way to go Tim! Your honesty, integrity and diligence are like a cool rain in a parched desert. Keep up the good work!

    I love Tim,

But…he said the FIRST Thing he would do is get rid of Obamacare.

And he voted to continue the Patriot Act. The law is un-Constitutitonal.

I would like to know WHO is The author of this report so that we can talk.

  4. Chris says:

I think the author is Conservative101 …. talk away ;-)

  5. Conservative 101 says:

Keepyourpower, I agree with you, and I believe Tim does too, that Obamacare is unconstitutional. Yes, I heard Tim say the same thing you did during his campaign, that he intends to get rid of Obamacare. What part of this budget continuing resolution vote makes you think he changed his mind and is now supporting Obamacare? By the way, this post isn’t about the Patriot Act, let’s stick to the budget CR vote in this discussion. Thanks

  6. Roy Smith says:

It seems that congress always finds ways to postpone “real” budget cuts. Those who say that eliminating $4 billion from this year’s budget is a great accomplishment can’t see the forest for the trees. THE DEFICIT IS $1.6 TRILLION this year alone! When congress eliminates the Department of Education and other alphabet agencies, then I’ll believe that congress – and in particular Tim Scott – is interested in “real” cuts. Until that happens, Tim Scott is not doing what most of us sent him to
    Washington to do.

  7. Conservative 101 says:

Roy, you’re right that $4 Bil is a drop in the ocean of debt, and I haven’t heard Tim claim that it represents a “great accomplishment” either. I believe 2 key questions before us are:
    1. Are the steps being taken with this budget process getting us closer to or farther away from addressing our out of control government spending?
    2. Are we getting closer to or farther away from replacing Obamacare with a constitutional, meaningful, helpful approach to solving our medical care/insurance funding need?

I wish both could be solved TODAY, but we know it’s a bot more complex than that. I want to see the specifics/details supporting Tim’s votes, and others votes as well, and I’ll make a fact based assessment on whether or not he is doing what I wanted him to do: Cut spending dramatically and replace Obamacare with a solution that actually helps, AND is constitutional.

Eliminating DOE and similar wasteful operations will be great and I look forward to it happening. I just recognize that, as significant as last November was, we still need more conservative folks in Congress/Senate to accomplish those goals. That’s why we have to stay informed, communicate with our elected officials and keep reminding them what we expect.

By the way, a 7% voter turnout in the recent Charleston County Council Special Election GOP primary in District 1 sure doesn’t make much of a statement that “we the people” are serious about changing our government for the better!!

Tim is very candid about the continuing resolution being a short term solution. The real fight is coming in the 2012 budget and that is where most of the Obamacare funding resides. We have to hold our officials accountable, but we also need to resist the desire for instant gratification – it’s not the real world.

  9. RINO Hunter says:

This vote was VERY disturbing!!! What about OBAMACARE!!!! I’m afraid Tim Scott is just another RINO! How else do you explain that Jeff Duncan, Tray Gowdy, Mike Mulvanee, and Joe Wilson all voted NO on this bill???? Tim Scott was the ONLY Republican from SC in the House to support it. Looks like he’s already been co-opted by Speaker Bainer and the other RINOs in Washington!!!

  10. MissLiberty says:

Did you read the article and Tim’s explanation for the vote? You don’t have to agree with him, but saying that he didn’t vote with Duncan, Gowdy, Mulvaney and Wilson misses the point that he also didn’t vote with Clyburn.

  11. liberty or death says:

Wouldn’t it be nice if we had an election, and that person went to Washington and when we woke up the next morning it was like going down the rabbit hole, all is well. WAKE UP PEOPLE, You sound like the feeble minded folks we’re accused of being. Did you ever play Chess? You don’t win by taking all of your opponents pawns. You WIN by never taking your eyes off the King and how to checkmate him. And sometimes that means a stategic withdrawal, sometimes it means allowing one of your own pawns to be taken, sneaking up behind the opponents Queen and check and mate. How simple minded of you all to think Tim can just wave a wand and bring Reagan back from the dead. Tim is a smart cookie and I think you need to give him some time. I have a feeling he is six or eight moves down the board and will win the war if not every battle. For crying out loud, he’s a congressman not a magician.

Everyone, please listen to Dave Ramsey. Whether you are a family or a nation, getting out of this hole requires baby-steps. If we need to have an emergency fund of $1000 and then start on our debt snowball, so be it. $6billion is a start.

  12. Christopher McCormick says:

6 billion in cuts in the CR is less than the intrest in that same amount of time. MR.SCOTT has settled in up there. I had a feeling he would.

  13. Christopher McCormick says:

In three weeks we will find out if Representives like Mr. Scott are for big government or the people that gave him his job. Mr Scott better recognize !!!

  14. RightDog says:

What Liberty or Death said. Jeeze, the man has been in office all of two months……8% of his elected term. The big battle is the 2012 budget, and my expectation is that Rep.Scott’s actions on this will be true to his words.

  15. Keepyourpower says:

@Conservative 101..did I EVER say he was supporting Obamacare?

As Michelle Bachmann said. Since she found the $105Billion already allocated for Obamacare..if they do not stop it NOW..it will be with us forever! Why did he vote FOR the CR when all the New Republican and old from SC voted against it? When 54 voted against it?Why???

And we need to make much larger cuts.. .this is not even a band aid! By the time they voted on the bill..we owed even MORE money than we had just paid! And at the same time.. foreign countries received the same amount if not more money from us…even our enemies….does THAT make sense?

A little bit here and a little bit there is just not going to fly! I understand they have to work with that person…Reid to get bills to the White House…but please!

If you will go back and read my post again…I said he disappointed me…2 times….one was voting to pass the Patriot Act and I stated the Patriot Act is not Constitutional. It seems many bills that Congress has put through since 9/11 are not Constitutional..and that should have EVERYONE rather steamed!!! I thought our new freshman Republican would be different!

I just see a trend with him already, that he is listening to the OLD REGIME before he listens to WE THE PEOPLE! Cantor, for one. Boehner, another.

If I am wrong…Tim ..you have my phone numbers. Please explain! You …no one else!

  16. Ms Chris says:

What is strange to me is that I can find segments of everyone of these post that I agreed with, but then the same post would become jumbled and convoluted ….. so then I went back and read them again and realized what was going on….. arrogance ….. the spirit of arrogance will mess up any well intentioned conversation ……

Let’s keep on keeping on folks in humility and determination and stay focused on the battle ahead ….. this is a lifetime fight that will not be won in one election, or even 5 elections in my opinion. We are in this for the long haul to bring America back to her former glory, and arrogance has no place in this battle.

  17. MissLiberty says:

Tim stated that “the vast majority of the $105 billion reportedly in this continuing resolution for Obamacare is actually in future budgets”. If that is indeed the case, Michele Bachmann might not be accurate. It’s worth considering.

Our fiscal year began on October 1st – by the time this congress was sworn in, 25% of the money had already been spent. I don’t like the continuing resolution either, but to suggest that Tim has no reasoning or methodology for his decision and is only following establishment leadership is a rather strong accusation particularly if you haven’t even asked him for an explanation.

  18. Lin Bennett says:

While I love Congressman Scott and think he is a REAL conservative…and while I also understand that Continuing Resolutions are a different animal, designed to keep the government operating, I also do not think that voting against the CR was necessarily a vote with Nancy Pelosi. It was also a vote to stop the madness in DC. Plain and simple. I will continue to support Congressman Scott and work with him, but if they don’t start taking a strong stand this is over. It will be hard…it will hurt…and it may cost some their seats. But if you are NOT willing to lay down your poltical career for your country…what are you willing to do?

  19. liberty or death says:

Tim is right about the ObamaCare spending. A CR basically just keeps the lights on. There is no new spending in a CR. Bachman is correct in that the bill has all this new spending, but it can’t be done in a CR. Don’t forget, while the Dems were in office we didn’t HAVE a budget. Choose your battles very carefully.

George Washington didn’t DEFEAT the British, he toyed with them like Jerry the mouse did to Tom the cat. The British got tired of getting their nose tweaked by this rag-tag army and just went home. Washington knew that what was important is keeping the army together and keeping the people at home motivated. And during the war all the newspapers trashed Washington and lots of congressmen wanted him replaced. Now our country has, rightly, almost cannonized the man. Peeps….watch and listen, it is so much more complicated than we know. See what Congressman Scott has to say when he comes home.

  20. Barbara Bates says:

Tim, I hope you read the Tea Party website. To stay in touch with “the people” you should read it. I know within my heart that you will vote what is best to acheive what you have said you would do to restore the government to the people. May God bless you and keep his arms around you. I have faith you will keep your promises. I will see you Tuesday night. Thank you for having the Town Hall Meeting to explain your vote.

  21. Christopher McCormick says:

Folks: let’s get real here. 6 billion every three weeks is not cutting when we borrow almost five times that to pay intrest in less time. Tim Scott screwed up and now he trying cover his rear end by getting on every local talk show to say they are cutting. They are playing the technicality game and it’s insulting. It’s not a budget cut when our debt keeps rising. We are not even paying the minimum on our so called credit card. A second term for Mr. Scott is not likely unless he changes course.

  22. Keepyourpower says:

    Thank you Lin!….Eloquent as usual!

I am not comfortable on this site, anymore.

People twist my words and accuse me of writing bad things about my friend…When I am only asking VALID questions. I BELIEVE IN KEEPING TIM’S FEET TO THE FIRE, AND I TOLD HIM SO! So does my step-mother who has known him since he was a small child. When she speaks..He listens. And even though we are not blood kin…She and I think alike. No dancing around..but get straight to the facts…ask questions..and expect the other person to answer freely and truthfully!

Do I not have a right to express my feelings? My thoughts?

I am NOT being arrogant. I lived with arrogance for 16 years…that was enough arrogance for me!

I work very, very hard to help this country! Even though I am now disabled and ill quite a bit…I give it my all! I worked hard to help Tim get elected. I was abused and lied about, while trying to help my family friend get elected. He was my choice…and that was really only MY business. I had his back!

I put up with years of form letters from Brown. I NEVER got a straight answer. And I was told I would get straight answers from Tim. I write him. I call him….Where is he?

Yet it seems others on this thread have closer ties. The author writes as though he got to speak to Tim…

    Why can’t I?

    Am I not WORTHY enough?

Why do some know about a Town Hall Meeting….yet I have heard nothing about it?
I still know nothing about it!

You know what? I give! I am tired of being one of the FEW who bust their butts to help this country. I blog,. I call. I comment all over the web. I joined many sites to help this country. I joined the Republican Party when I was not even a Republican. I work hard in this party! I get out on the street and start conversations to get people involved. I get people registered to vote. I spend my nights, and part of my days, doing research. I travel to Columbia when possible. I join groups to get things done in the state legislature. .. and more! Why do I do this?

And one more thing….WHERE were all the TEA PARTY PATRIOTS last night when the Republican Party was reorganizing? Hmm? How do you expect to get the Republican party to listen and DO what you would like done, if you do NOT join and become a committeeman and actually WORK with the party? Is WORK a dirty 4 letter word to you? Call me Blunt…I don’t care. This is ME! I am tired of the DANCE!

Maybe it is time to do something else!

Enjoy tearing each other down….I have other things I can do to save this country from tyranny!

    God help us!

    And God Bless America!

  23. Conservative 101 says:

Keepyour power, we are in violent agreement on holding Tim accountable , just as we will the rest of them, so I’m sure not advocating special treatment for Tim. All of us are frustrated and impatient to varying degress and for varying reasons, none of which is necessarily more relevant than the other.

On a couple of your comments: The town hall meeting was posted on Tim’s facebook yesterday around 5:30 and we received a copy of the announcement right after that to post on our web site, which we did just as other conservative groups sent the announcement out. I had heard that he intended to have one next week, but did not know the specific date/place until the announcement came out. You are absoluely correct on your precinct reorganization comments, if ” we the people” care so much, where are we when it comes time to actually get out and participate…face to face. A third party is a losing proposition , so, if we don’t like “traditional GOP” candidates we need to get engaged and help find, support, nominate and elect conservative GOP folks.

I also agree with your statements about tearing each other down. How do we expect to win long term with the approach of fighting with other conservatives and arguing over who is more conservative. Our debate should be with the competition, the liberal agenda, not each other.

I would hate to see you walk away from the debate because we need many conservative views of these issues because they aren’t simple and easy, and certainly won’t be solved overnight. Discussion of the topic is helpful when each of us has to think through our position and articulate why with something to substantiate it rather than try to talk louder than the other guy or resort to name calling. I think it’s important to get the facts and understand the thought behind Tim’s or others’ votes, then we each decide whether we think the vote or position is taking us in the direction we believe is required. Some want Obamacare stopped today, others might wait longer, etc. I want to see how each vote or action supports a strategy that I believe will result in Obamacare having a stake through it’s heart and waiting 4-5 years to get it done won’t cut it.

Keep it up, you bring thought to the discussion and that’s what it’s about.

  24. MissLiberty says:

Amen keepyourpower – where were all those tea partiers for reorg and where were they for the special election? I’m still fuming over a 7% turnout! You are doing great work and many people appreciate your efforts. Don’t give up.

  25. Christopher McCormick says:

To those of you I have offended with my post about Tim Scott’s vote on CR, I apologize. I just know some of you have strong feelings about Tim. May I remind every one what got OBAMA elected…” FEELINGS” People were told over and over to stop thinking and start feeling, then punch the button for change. Facts not feelings is what applies to my views on Tim’s vote. I do like the guy, I liked and still do Larry Kobrosky, whom I believe we originally endorsed.

  26. MissLiberty says:

Christopher – we’re not all going to agree all the time, but we should express our opinions freely and if someone doesn’t like your thoughts, that’s too bad. I like your point about feelings because that’s exactly what has gotten us into our current mess – feelings and, of course, apathy. I appreciate your views on Tim’s vote and I hope you’ll be able to make his townhall on Tuesday to hear what he says andd to ask a question. Just to clarify, the Charleston Tea Party didn’t endorse any primary candidate – we did endorse in the general election – it was Myrtle Beach that endorsed Larry.

  27. Conservative 101 says:

Christopher, I wasn’t offended by your comments and I agree with you that we should base our positions on issue related facts/substance, not emotion/feelings. Just because you may have a different opinion of Tim’s vote, I shouldn’t conclude that your opinion is based on emotion and mine is based on fact…or vice versa. In case you haven’t seen it, there is a great Town Hall article this morning on this very topic: http://townhall.com/columnists/rachelalexander/2011/03/19/gutting_obamacare_in_stop-gap_spending_bills_not_necessarily_prudent/page/full/

I respect your comment about Larry Kobrovsky, but “we” didn’t endorse him, you and others did. Our Charleston TEA party web site has a variety of conservative, patriotic readers and you will find supporters for Tim Scott, Mark Lutz, Larry Kobrovsky….I hope we can continue to learn from the past but look forward as we focus our efforts to help steer our elected officials. Thank you for your comments.

  28. My concerns include the Budget Vote and the Vote on the Patriot Act extension. I understand the rationale in both Votes and will continue to Pray for and Support Tim Scott.
However that said, I am absolutely opposed to the actions of both the Republican and Democratic Leadership in the United States Congress at Washington in regards to supporting the President and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in deploying United States Armed Forces weapons and assets and yes-personell to support United Nations One World Government/New World Order Military Action in Libya.
Allegedly the reason was to protect the lives of the “demonstrators and protestors” opposed to the Libyan Dictator and advocating the overthrow of the Libyan Government. Unfortunately-the reality from my standpoint is that those calling for the overthrow of the Libyan Dictator are Islamic Jihadists themselves, and they are involved in the Middle Eastern Jihadist campaign to capture Middle Eastern nations and transform them all into Jihadist Islamic Republics from which will be organizd the 21st Century Middle Eastern Caliphate where Islamic Jihadist theology and eschatology and Sharia Law will rule supreme and which will be protected by the Nuclear Scimitar of Nuclear weapons in the Islamic Republic of Iran.
With a cost of $600,000.00 US dollars per Tomahawk Cruise Missile, the launching of 114 Tomahawk Cruise Missiles against Libyan Air Defenses means that over $68 million US dollars have been now spent to protect the lives of Islamic Jihadists hellbent on overthrowing the Libyan Dictator and his Government. The irony in all this is that the very people that the UN Military action seeks to protect and now protects would sanction the murder of every solitary United States Republican and Democratic Political Leader who sponsored, empowered, supported and authorized this participation by the USA if they refused to accept Allah and Muhammed as His Prophet if ever compelled to convert to Islam. It astonishes me that a mere 11 or so years after Islamic Jihadists murdered over 3,000 Americans on 9/11/01 and after almost 10,000 US Troops have died at the hands of Islamic Jihadists in Iraq and Afghanistan, the President, Republicans and Democrats in the US Congress now authorize the use of lethal force by the US Military to protect the lives of Islamic Jihadists on a Holy War to establish a Islamic Caliphate.
God Help the United States of America.

  29. Roy Smith says:

I just sent a letter to Mr. Scott stating that the REAL solution to getting the federal government’s budget under control is to enact a law prohibiting the FED from purchasing any Securities whatsoever (my current understanding is that the FED is purchasing 80 percent of our debt by simply running the printing presses). These miniscule budget cuts that congress is quibbling over is not going to affect anything – we just blew that much bombing Libya. Cut off the fed is the same as enacting a constitutional amendment to balance the budget and a lot easier path to fiscal sanity.

Every point of view is necessary and required. We are not going to march in lockstep ’cause that’s called facism. When people ask me about the Tea Party, I always say the ONLY thing we have in common is a firm belief that our Constitution is THE foundation of this country and all that is good, prosperous and successful in this country is the result of following it to the letter. Get angry, but for pity’s sake don’t get silent.

As for the budget….5 years, bah, I could fix it in 6 months. Here’s how: there is nothing in the Constitution that says the federal government should be sending ANYONE a check for ANY reason except maybe a refund of over paid taxes. There, I’m done. Whoo – Boy I can here it now from the fully 50% of the population that gets some amount of their ADL (Activities of Daily Living) in the form of government largesse. And that includes alot of so-called Tea-Partiers. I can hear the whining now!!! “But I put into the system”, “I’m entitled”, “they owe me”….yatta yatta yatta. Its the Matrix, baby….do you want the blue pill or the red pill? Give me the RED pill, and painful reality, every time.

  33. liberty or death says:

PS: I’ve grown to like Tim Scott alot. I originally pulled for Mark Lutz because although I liked what Tim said, his connections to the party machine made me nervous. Who does he owe favors to? Once he won the nomination I was 100% behind him. Doesn’t mean I’m not watching him like a hawk….we all need to be careful to look at all sides of an issue before we judge him though. That’s all. Do I wish we could clone Sen. DeMint, absolutely, but that’s not possible. Do I think DeMint will die on his sword? Definitely (we probably need to stop him, sometimes, so he can remain effective). Not sure Tim will though, which is why I worked for Mark. I was completely sure that Mark Lutz would fall on his sword for the good of this country.

  34. MissLiberty says:

I’m with you l or d, we need to watch all of our officials very carefully. And for heaven’s sake, let’s not throw anyone under the bus the minute we disagree with him. This is going to be a long war and it won’t be won with soundbites, slogans and parroted talking points. And it isn’t going to be won because we elect one perfect person for any office. It’s going to be won with hard work from our legislators, hard work from us, strategic moves, critical thinking, recruiting, tenacity and communication.

  35. RightDog says:

Right on! The progressive movement in the US started, I believe, back well before WW I. Standing on the shoulders of Karl Marx and other socialists, they’ve been systematically and deliberately ruining our country for darn near 100 years!

The conservative movement really didn’t get a head of steam up until maybe the 60′s with movers and shakers like Buckley and Friedman and Rand, and followed by Reagan and others. We haven’t been at this game as long as they have, so don’t expect overnight success. We’ll win one fight at a time, and it will take a couple of generations until the hippies finally meet their maker and a new conservative generation takes over. We need not only to take over DC but the education structure itself, as they are still indoctrinating our children and grand children with revisionist socialist crapola. Keep working!
