When you are walking around a town or city the first thing that you are drawn to is what you can see in your eyeline. This is only natural. It’s where all the shops are, where all the people are and the many attractions that you find. Street entertainers, food and snack vendors, rides for children, it’s all there. However, if you get a chance, look up above the shop line and the lower levels. You might be surprised to find that there are architectural gems and also a hint at the surprise past.

It sometimes shows how the town or cityscape has changed over the years. A great example of this is in Cheltenham. The High Street in Cheltenham is very long. It was once the site of a major Victorian spa town as people came to take “the waters”. As its fame grew, so did its wealth.
If you look now you’ll see that the high-end shops are all at the southern end. As you walk down, the shops decrease in their exclusivity and become ones associated with economic spending. It’s a big change but if you look up you’ll see fantastic architraves and corniches suggesting that the whole street once had great wealth and status, not just the part of it where the Marks and Spencers is.
