The “Big Five”, also known as the five largest animals in Africa, are lions, leopards, rhinoceros, elephants and African buffalos. So, where can you see them?
- South Africa – Kruger National Park
Kruger National Park is South Africa’s largest wildlife reserve, with 147 different mammal species.
- Tanzania – Serengeti Crater and Ngorongoro Crater
The Serengeti is a great place to see the Big 5, as are the nearby Ngorongoro Crater. The Serengeti is a Masai word that means “endless grass plains”. - Namibia – Etosha National Park & Waterberg Plateau Park
Namibia has a landscape that is very different from other safari destinations. It features huge sand-dunes and the Etosha pan, Africa’s largest salt pan. Etosha National Park has four of the five Big 5. Buffalo is the only one missing. Buffalo can be seen on the nearby Waterberg Plateau. This is also the country with the most wild cheetahs, so you are likely to see them.
- Botswana – Moremi Game Reserve and Chobe National Park
The Okavango Delta and the Chobe River, which are swampy and flooded, have created a landscape of vast grasslands and fertile plains in Botswana. It is a natural habitat that attracts wildlife in all sizes and shapes, including birds like storks.
- Kenya – Maasai Mara Game Reserve
The Maasai Mara or simply ‘The Mara’, as it is known locally, is one the most famous game reserves in the world. The Maasai mara covers an area of approximately 1,500 square kilometers and is home to one of the highest concentrations of wildlife in the world.
